On 15 March I chaired the last All Party Crossrail Parliamentary Group meeting of the current Parliament where we had an update from business organisations in London on their support for the project and its importance for London and the UK as a whole. At that time we were still awaiting an important decision concerning Crossrail which has huge potential benefits for East London and my own Ilford South constituency and I am delighted that two days later on 17 March 2010 the good news, which I had pressed for was announced. The Tunnelling and Underground Construction Academy is to be built on the border of my constituency. Here is the Press Release with details:
Crossrail welcomes LSC funding for Tunnelling & Underground Construction Academy
Terry Morgan CBE, Chairman of Crossrail Ltd today welcomed the announcement by Business Secretary, Lord Mandelson that the Learning & Skills Council (LSC) is to provide £5 million of funding for a new tunnelling and underground construction academy.
Mr Morgan said:
“We are delighted to receive £5 million in funding from the Learning & Skills Council. This is great news for the programme and great news for the tunnelling and underground construction industry. This decision means we can now progress our plans to build this fantastic training facility, which the industry so urgently needs.”
The academy will be sited in Aldersbrook Sidings in Newham. Construction will commence later this year and is expected to be fully operational by the end 2010 beginning of 2011.
